# A light-filled name and busy skin cells

> About LumiDerm Skin Clinic’s ingredient afterlives — LumiDerm Skin Clinic is an editorial research site, not a medical business: essays about the chemical afterlives of ingredients around skin cells.

**About the publication**

Illumination has its uses. What happens after an ingredient arrives is the surprise I enjoy.

## LumiDerm’s title

LumiDerm Skin Clinic is the title of this editorial site. There is no medical business behind the name: no clinical care, prescriptions, product orders or appointment bookings are available here. My interest in published research concerns the chemical afterlives of ingredients around skin cells.

The light in the name suggests an afterimage, a trace that invites another look. The [extracellular NAD experiment](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11135366/) gives that curiosity a more mischievous turn: the added material was broken down around cultured human skin fibroblasts, and products of that breakdown entered the cells. The original ingredient name begins to seem wonderfully inadequate.

The printmaking scene on the opening page is an imagined illustration of a lingering impression. It depicts an artistic process, without claiming to show a research experiment.

## Chemical afterlives

The residue is sometimes physical. A [skin penetration study](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3016279/) reported copper retained as a dermal depot. At other times the subject is an activity: [collagen synthesis increased in human fibroblast cultures without a change in cell number](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3169264/).

These findings have different characters, and that difference supplies much of the pleasure. An ingredient list now gives me only a partial account of what skin encounters. Chemistry, location and cellular activity make the story stranger and more concrete.

A visible skin change introduces a further subject. A trace can be measured or a cell response observed while the significance for appearance remains a question. I enjoy the interval before those observations have been fitted into a grand claim. There is room to be impressed and still ask what happened next.

## Medical advice

Nothing in these essays is medical advice or an assessment of an individual person’s skin. The site offers neither a personal treatment decision nor a regimen to follow. An interesting laboratory result can remain interesting on those terms.

The [reading list](/references) gathers the published work discussed here. The [contact page](/contact) states the present limits on correspondence and the information that would make a factual correction useful.

LumiDerm Skin Clinic is my notebook of published research on ingredients’ chemical afterlives; it is not a business and offers no medical advice.
